Miss Kaylie, the Big Girl

Kaylie may be the baby of the family, but she isn't much of a baby any more.  She's growing like a weed!  There are a few 18m things that she can wear, but she's mostly into 24m and 2T clothes, and size 6 shoes, if you can believe it.  If she keeps going at this rate, she'll be into 3T by the fall!
She's getting better at communicating, too.  It had seemed for a long time that she had stagnated and even regressed some in her speech development.   She's very verbal, but most of what she says is unintelligible babble, and when she wanted something, she would just grunt and point. Elora has always been so precocious in this area, that it makes Kaylie's more gradual progress seem even more so.  Now, she's started coming to get us when she wants something, and leading us by the hand to what she wants.  She still does a lot of grunting and pointing, but she's using more words now, too. She now says "Mama" and "Daddy" quite clearly, and says "Papa" and "Gigi" pretty well too.  She says "doh" for no, "dow" for down, "pwee" for please, and "dan oo" for thank you. "Yay" is an easy one, and one that she's been using a lot lately, because she's also potty training!

We're still in the early stages, but she's doing really very well with it.  I've been putting her on the little princess potty for a while now, but it's become obvious that the concept has really clicked for her.  She often wakes up with a (mostly) dry diaper in the mornings, and we've gotten to the point that she only actually needs 2 or 3 new diapers in the course of the day.  And a couple of times, she's even come to get me and pulled me with her to the bathroom!  She has her own potty chart, and gets a sticker everytime she sits on the potty, whether she actually uses it or not, and of course, we make a huge deal about it when she does.  It'll be a while before she's ready for pull up pants, but we are definitely off to a good start.

Kaylie has also graduated from the crib to a toddler bed.  I had hoped to keep her in the crib a while longer, but she put paid to that idea when she figured out how to climb out on her own, and fell on her head.  The discomfort of the experience may have been enough to deter her from trying it again, but I didn't really want to test that theory.    She's now sleeping in what was Elora's toddler bed, because it is lower to the ground and has the rails to keep her from rolling out.

Elora has the crib-turned-day bed now, which is the same size as the other but is a few inches higher, and has no rails.  Both girls seem to be perfectly happy with the arrangement.

The crib rail is now a hanging rack for their dress up clothes, which is great, because the bins were over-flowing.  Now the dresses and skirts, and leotards can hang, while the accessories can live in the bins.

And, while Kaylie isn't quite two yet, we're already getting into those "terrible two's".  She has definite opinions about what she wants, and isn't even remotely shy about letting her wishes be known.  (You should see her scolding Elora, scowling and shaking her finger at her in agitation.  I'm trying to discourage this, but it's hard to do when I'm also trying not to laugh.)  She's become quite proficient in the art of the temper tantrum already, banging her head on the floor when angry and displaying an impressive lung capacity.  All you have to do is tell her "no", and she falls to the floor, sobbing as if heart broken and/or screaming as if dying in agony.  I have a hard time telling the difference between her "I'm just mad" cry and her "I'm actually hurt" cry.  And I thought Elora was dramatic!  Although, in all fairness, it may just be that time has fuzzed my memories of Elora's tantrums, while Kaylie's are more immediate.

Potty Training: No Longer Optional

I've been trying to let Elora do the potty training thing in her own time, letting her ease into it when she's ready.   I've been gently encouraging, but not demanding. She's demonstrated that she has the ability--the awareness, the muscle control, etc-- she just doesn't want to do it.  It may just be that she doesn't want to stop playing to go potty.  Maybe it's a control thing.  Maybe it's just comfortable, because that's what she's always done.  Whatever her reason, I've decided that she's had plenty of time to do it on her own, and it's time to say bye-bye to the diapers.

She's gotten pretty big for the little princess potty, so we went to Lowe's yesterday and picked up a new toilet seat so that she can use the BIG big girl potty, as we call it.  She's been resistant to it.  She wanted to keep using the little one, but she's coming around.

We also got this book from the library, and we've been reading it to her every time she sits on the potty.  She likes it so much, that I'm thinking we need to get her her own copy.  The potty chart is filling up, and she might actually be getting that Elmo puppet sometime soon!  Today is our first day of the official "practice week".  I'm going to remind her/take her every hour or so, so that whether she has to go or not, her play is going to be interrupted.  At the end of the practice week, we're going to say adios to the diapers for good!  Wish us luck, this is sure to be a bumpy--and probably messy--transition for us.

Potty Chart

Elora is back to being uninterested in potty training, so I spent more than an hour making this....

only to realize that my printer can't handle paper any wider than 8.5".  So then I made this.

At least making the first one wasn't a complete waste of time...and maybe I'll order a print, and have it laminated so it can be used repeatedly.  I covered this one with clear contact paper, so this one is re-usable too.  Too bad that she isn't filling in those blocks.  I even have these to use as an incentive, courtesy of Gigi:

She wants them, but apparently, she doesn't want them bad enough.  Or maybe she's not getting that she has to use the potty every day for a week to earn them? (Elmo is her reward for #1, Big Bird is for #2.)  She tinkled in the potty once (see Tuesday on the chart?) and wanted me to hand over the Elmo puppet.
We'll get there.  Right?

Update: 5 minutes after writing this post, she asked to use the potty. :)

Potty Training Progress

So, does anyone remember this post?  I ordered that potty almost 2 years ago.  Man, did I ever jump that gun.  She's been aware of the potty process for that long, which is cool, but she definitely was not ready.  Every so often, we've been testing out the potty-training waters, just to see where she's at.  We've experimented with the  pull-up diapers, and the big girl undies. At some point I decided to stop pushing.  As my  MIL pointed out to me, she is not going to be walking into kindergarten in diapers, so why not let her come to it in her own time?  I ask her a couple of times a day if she needs to use the potty, and make a big deal about it when she does, but I haven't pushed it.

She is sitting on her little potty here, but out of respect for the teenager she will one day be, I cropped them .  You can still see how pleased she is with herself.  PS: Future Elora, you have your father to thank for this consideration.  :)
This past week or so, though, she's been coming to me to tell me that she has to potty!!  Yesterday, she asked to go to the potty no fewer than 7 times!  And today, she told me that she needed to potty while we were at Target, but I was unprepared, so I told her she'd have to wait until we got home...and she did!  I hadn't expected her to be able to hold it, but when we got home 20 or 30 minutes later she asked again to use the potty, and her diaper was still completely dry!  I am so excited, and so proud.  We're getting there.  :)

Oh, and Kaylie has said bye-bye to mushy baby foods.  Now she's eating whole foods with the rest of us.

Smileys and Pottys and Snails

Brandon's nephew has begun a new business venture making incense, and I volunteered to make a smiley face logo for him.  It's really simple, and nothing like what Jess can do, but he's really happy with it and so I am too.  I think I am going to go back and put "Chef" across the front of the hat, since that's his nickname.  Heck, that's the reason for the hat in the first place.

Last night, I ordered a potty for Elora, so we can start on the road to potty training.  I looked at a couple, but in the end it came down to the BabyBjorn Potty Chair, or the Fisher Price Pink Princess Potty Chair.  The first takes a simple, minimalist approach, while the second tries to make it fun.  I went for the fun one.

It has 4 different little songs that it can play when she does her business, the seat comes off and can be used on the big toilet when she gets older, the bowl is removable for easy cleaning, and the back folds down to make it a step stool so she can reach to wash her hands.  Seriously, how cute is that??

We had a nice thunderstorm early this evening.  Thunderstorms are one of those things that I took for granted in Florida, and that I've missed terribly since coming here.  I wish I could have been at home to sit and enjoy it, butI was thankful that the angry looking sky didn't open up on me as I was running around Patch trying to get dinner, get cash for the babysitter, and get Elora.  I got to hear a bit of thunder, see a bit of lightening, and felt a few cool sprinkles before I drove out from under it one the way home.

When I got there, I saw this guy cruising around the drive in front of my house.  I thought he was cool, so I ran upstairs and deposited Elora with her dad so I could run back down with the camera.  These are straight out of the camera, I didn't even crop them.

He obliged me by continuing to cruise, and I even caught him sticking out his tongue (I assume it's a tongue, I'm not really sure) to sample the tastes/textures/smells around him.  I always feel so special when I get to see things like this.  Maybe I would get to see these things more if I paid more attention, but then, perhaps they wouldn't be so special to me?  He's really neat, and I sincerely hope that some oblivious person didn't step on him before he could make his way back to the (relative) safety of the garden.
